The Story Behind OUMAA

There was a time in my life when everything felt heavy.
I was surrounded by people, yet I felt alone.
Not because I didn’t have friends or family, but because I didn’t know who I could truly trust with the thoughts I was carrying.

I needed someone to talk to.
Someone who wouldn’t judge me.
Someone who wouldn’t repeat my words to others.
Someone who would simply listen, and help me make sense of what I was feeling.

But there was no such space.
No person I could open up to without fear.
No moment where I could let my guard down and just be.

That is where the seed of OUMAA was planted.

In many African cultures, “OUMAA” refers to an older, wiser woman - someone who holds space for others with patience, clarity, and care.
Someone you go to not for solutions, but for grounding.
Someone who listens without interruption.
Someone who understands without asking for details.

And it reminded me of my own grandmother - the wisest person I knew.
She had a way of hearing the words I never said out loud.
Her presence alone made everything feel lighter.
When she passed, there was an emptiness that stayed, not just because she was gone, but because the kind of listening she offered no longer existed in my world.

Years later, during a difficult period of my life, I found myself wishing she were still there.
Wishing I could sit beside her.
Wishing I could speak freely, honestly, quietly.
